In athletics, because of the close contact and often hot, humid environments bacteria and viruses are multiplied. Locker rooms, weight rooms, and wrestling rooms are particularly prone to becoming breeding grounds. These include colds, flu, pink eye, and Impetigo, Ringworm, Staph, and MRSA.

Cross-contamination of all of the above is problematic, particularly Staph and MRSA. While Staph is serious, MRSA can be deadly. According to the MRSA Research Center at the University of Chicago, 90,000 Americans a year get MRSA. 20,000 of them die. Student athletes need protection against Staph and MRSA.
